Difar Array
The DIFAR Array system has been built by CO.L.MAR. s.r.l., La Spezia, Italy after a contract from TUBITAK, Turkey.
Purpose of the system is to study acoustic noise sources in the ocean, in the frequency range up to 2 kHz, putting them in relation with direction of arrival. The geometry, 8 elements in a vertical line, gives directionality in the vertical plane, while each single element, a DIFAR sensor, provides directionality in the horizontal plane.
Data from the array can also be recorded on a hard disk controlled by a dedicated PC module housed inside the buoy. On the receiving vessel a unit is mounted on the mast which houses a rotatable receiving antenna for the main data stream, the radio receiver which detects and demodulates the radio signal which is then transmitted to the lab. In the same unit is also housed the radio transmitter for the controls from the lab to the buoy.
