Col.Mar featured on RaiPlay: hydrophone at the heart of KM3NeT project in NOOS episode from July 21, 2025
On July 21, 2025, the show NOOS – The Adventure of Knowledge, hosted by Alberto Angela and available on RaiPlay, featured one of Europe’s most fascinating scientific endeavors: KM3NeT, the massive underwater telescope installed off the coast of Sicily to detect neutrinos from deep space.
During the episode, Prof. Giorgio Riccobene from INFN – National Institute for Nuclear Physicsand researcher Virginia Sciacca presented the telescope’s operation and the vital role of acoustic technology in its deployment. A hydrophone manufactured by Col.Mar Italia was shown and explained as part of the telescope’s acoustic detection system.
The digital hydrophone DG1330 is used for two key purposes in KM3NeT: tracking the precise position of the optical sensors underwater, and passively monitoring marine mammals such as sperm whales and dolphins, ensuring that scientific work does not disturb the ecosystem.
For Col.Mar, taking part in such an ambitious scientific mission is a source of pride and a recognition of the reliability and innovation behind its products. The featured hydrophone is the result of years of research and development in collaboration with leading Italian research institutes.
Thanks to this NOOS episode, millions of viewers discovered how a hydrophone, designed and built in Italy, is playing a key role in both exploring the universe and preserving marine life. A small device with a big impact.
